Did anyone have successfully used VBA to connect via Excel macro?

Has anyone gotten this to work? Here is what we are trying to do
We have large workbooks (15~20 tabs) that we open, select the region in question, refresh all the tabs, save and send to regional leaders. this can take 50-60 minutes to complete. We have created macro's that will do the refreshes and are testing an automation tool that will make the parameter selections then run the macro's. This is all done behind the scenes and does not tie up users Excel so they can keep on working. The last part is trying to get the connection to OS working. We are using SSO but having trouble with the code provided. Have a call with my partner and my Azure folks to see if we can figure something out but wanted to see if anybody has gotten it to work.
In our case, the user might not be in excel when the automation tool runs so there might not be an active connection. This would allow us to run whenever we wanted from the users machine and not impact the users ability to use Excel. STill working through alot so not sure it will all work as we want, this is just one final piece to get working.
