Microsoft excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action

Hi,

We are transitioning over to OneStream version 9.0.1. As part of the transition, we are running validations on the data we have copied over from our previous environments.

We are running reports like quickviews & XFGETCELLs to retrieve data. However, after clicking on Refresh Sheet/Workbook, we are prompted with the error message:

Microsoft excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action

Does anyone have a solution to this resolve this issue? This is holding us back with our validations, ultimately affecting our go-live date if this issue persists. We would not feel confident going live if this Microsoft Excel error continues to impact our user base from running their reports.

For additional context:

  • Microsoft Excel is 64-bit version
  • Excel Add-in version 9.0.1 is installed.
  • Tested on multiple reports along with recreating reports
  • Tested with multiple users/devices

There are various posts about this same excel pop-up message and it happens because of various reasons i.e., excel being on 32 bit vs 64 bit. We are on 64-bit excel and faced this issue during the upgrade process but still proceed to go-live with 9.0.1. Do note that this message does not stop the sheet from refreshing the data but you need to click ok each time it pops-up as the sheet still continues to refresh the data in the backend. So if the sheet takes 10min to refresh, you can keep clicking ok on the OLE message each time it appears or wait for 10 min and once you see your session complete in task activity click ok at the end to see the numbers.

Do report this issue to your CSM if you are on 64-bit and the work arounds posted around this topic does not help you in any way.

      Hi 1392,

We are on 64-bit. I've tested your work around to just click OK whenever it pops up and can confirm that the report eventually refreshes. However, I do not see any GetDataCells activity in task activity for my XFGETCELL reports. So, tracking the completion before clicking OK is a little difficult.

Are you still on version 9.0.1 and are you still using the workarounds? I will say it does get annoying/misleading to users having to keep clicking on OK hoping for the results to appear. This would not be a pleasant experience for users transitioning over to an updated version of OneStream.

We seem to be only experiencing this for XFGETCELL reports. QuickViews work fine.

This behavior is applicable for both XF and quickviews. Do note that not all excel activities get recorded on task activity, as it has to hit a minimum cell count.

Yes, it is still the same behavior for us. As I recommended earlier do reach out to your CSM about this issue and it being a show stopper for your upgrade, so OneStream can provide a fix with more customers reporting it.
