All,

Is there a way to extract metadata(entity dimension) with just parent child relationship information and not all the application member properties  using the usual export process?

You can always use gridview tab in the dimension library to get the infomation in a tablular format. Within that you can check the "Display Parent Child relationships" checkbox and select the required columns to be visible in gridview.

Indeed you can, right click on the dimension, choose "Select Members to Extract"

And then you can extract only the relationship of the members you want.

In the above example, when you open up relationships and select the relationships you want, be sure to uncheck the box at the top for "Extract Members For Each Selected Relationship".  Then you will get just the parent/child relationships and not all the member info.
